DENNY'S OR DEATH By Glenn Gaslin When Jason Alan Pfaff leaves a Denny's, he's usually on his way to another one. The guy's mission, he explains, "is to visit as many Denny's as possible before I die." And he means it. Just check out his web site, Project: Denny's, which tells of his adventures beneath magic yellow signs reading, "Always Open." Jason, 23, has munched at 52 Denny's this year. Only 1,548 left. He plans to hit every one in the country by 2011. But why? Why not just walk naked to Antarctica or read every book ever written? Something easy. "Denny's embodies the true American spirit," explains the brave questmaster. As a teenager, Jason worked the late shift waiting tables. Now he uses weekends (he just graduated college in Ohio) searching for Grand Slams and free refills in Texas, Oklahoma, Virginia -- wherever there's a Denny's. He and friends pack into "Das Bus," an old school bus Jason outfitted with furniture and steer horns. On the road, they ambush Denny's, take pictures and try to score free stuff. The booty so far includes waiter name tags, balloons, spoons and a vomit clean-up kit, which is, according to Jason, "complete with a bio-hazard bag." -- Glenn Gaslin, a Los Angeles writer, is a close personal friend of Denny.
